People In Music History
Strauss, Johann (the younger; 1825-1899) Austrian violinist, conductor, and
composer of enormously successful waltzes in noticeably artistic style,
including The Blue Danube, Roses from the South, and Tales from the Vienna
Woods; called the Waltz King. Wrote also polkas (Tritsch-Tratsch, Thunder and
Lightning, etc.) and other dances; and 16 operettas including Die Fledermaus
and The Gypsy Baron. Other operettas, e.g., Vienna Blood, have been made by
others from his music. Toured much (London, 1869; United States 1872). Son of
Johann Strauss. Collaborated in a few works with his brother Josef Strauss.
